Buckie Thistle v Keith

Not for the first time this season Keith matched their opponents for most of the game, but slack goals conceded and chances squandered at the other end proved costly against defending champions Buckie Thistle.

The Jags had former Keith Highland League Cup winner Andy Macaskill making his debut, and I must admit it was strange seeing the wee buzzbomb in a green and white strip. The Maroons were without the suspended Michael Ralton, but Ryan Spink was available again.

The home side opened the scoring after only six minutes, Shaun Carroll pouncing on slack defending to run on and slam a low 15 yarder into the corner of the net. Eight minutes later the same player was allowed to whip home from 18 yards.

With 19 minutes on the clock Cammy Keith raced in on target only for ex Maroons custodian Daniel Bell to race out and thwart him on the edge of the box. Four minutes on and James Brownie saw his low 15 yarder blocked, although he might have done better. Two minutes later another one on one for Cammy Keith and Bell, saw the goalie come out on top again.

However, the Maroons seemed to get back into the game with 29 minutes gone, a pinpoint cross ball from Cammy Keith was pounced on by Ryan Whelan who blasted into the roof of the net from 18 yards for his 5th goal of the season. Game on! or so we thought, but as been the norm this season, the visitors shot themselves in the foot five minutes later, Andy Smith standing off Sam Robertson who took the chance to rifle home from the far side of the box.

Keith struggled to make any impact in the second half and midway through the half a remarkable stramash in their six yard box started with Craig Dorrat heading against the post. Despite attempts to clear the lines, the ball was eventually deemed to have gone over the line, with Dorrat appearing to be the scorer.

That was that as they say, and even with Jags playing the last ten minutes with only ten men, John Maitland having to limp off and all three subs having been utilised, the three home points were safely secured.

KEITH – Dey, Spink, Clark, A Smith, Manson, Begg, McNamee, Fraser, Keith, R Whelan(Foy 66), Brownie(Sopel 66). Subs unused – Robertson, Hutcheon.
